1. Graduation!
In the early summer, the undergraduate students graduated successfully from the second class ofCQU-UBC“2+2” undergraduate program in material science and were going to graduate study! In this year, the world suffered from the Covid-19 epidemic. Chongqing University cares deeply aboutthe overseas students. Together with a large number of anti-epidemic supplies, the overseas students also received a letter entitledWhale waves thousands of miles, a reed can sailfrom Chongqing University. The blessings and concerns from Chongqing University inspires them to overcome difficulties in a foreign country, and adds another joy to their graduation ceremony.
2. What is the UBC Class?
In order to learn from the experience of international famous universities, improve the professional level of education, and cultivate high-quality personnel with international vision and international competitiveness,theCQU-UBC”2+2” undergraduate program in material engineering(shorted for “The UBC Class” later) started from 2015. This program adopted the UBC curriculum system and syllabus, which integrated the advantage of metallurgical engineering and materials engineering. All the courses were taught in English. Students studied in Chongqing University for the first two years and then went to UBC for another two years after achieving the UBC entry standard. They were awarded bachelor degrees from both Chongqing University and UBC. The UBC class is the exploration and practice of thenew engineeringinnovative personnel cultivation mode, i.e., integration and crossing of metallurgy engineering and material engineering, in the school of materials science and engineering, Chongqing University.
The aim of the joint program is to realize personalized education and provide students with diversified study choice. This program can cultivate students' ability to master the international cutting-edge professional knowledge, offer the students opportunity to study in a multicultural environment and improve their innovation and international awareness. The students can become personnel with international vision and compete in an international level in the future.
3. Study and life in UBC
During the four-year study, students of the UBC class have a lot of feelings. Their study life were full of tears and laughs, what impressed the students most were the interesting andunusual experience from this joint program..
In her study report, Xiaoyu Guo mentioned that they participated in a project to investigate the crash of a US Marine Corps KC-130T in 2017. They worked in team to research in-depth on how to avoid radial and intergranular cracks in blades caused by pitting and intergranular corrosion. In addition, they put forward corresponding suggestions on aircraft material selection, aircraft parking environment and material surface technology, respectively. These experiences increased her sense of accomplishment and sharpened her passion for cutting-edge technology.
Yuchang Xiao appreciated cultivation of the school and sent a thank-you note toCollege of Materials Science and Engineering, Chongqing University.In the letter, she thanked Chongqing University forcultivation. Just as the original intention of this program, diversified study experience in four years has enabled her to have an international vision, cross-cultural awareness and strong sense of social responsibility.
4.Promising future
After graduating from UBC, all the students chose to continue a postgraduate study in overseas universities. They have received offers from the top world universities, such as Imperial College London, University of Toronto in Canada, National University of Singapore, Federal Polytechnic University in Zurich, et al. The effect of the joint program has been unanimously recognized by domestic and overseas universities and this way of study has been widely praised by the society.
