The School of Marxism of Chongqing University has a long history and sound foundation.In 2000, the Chongqing Architecture University and the Chongqing Architecture College were integrated with the former Chongqing University, then today’s Chongqing University was established. The former respective teaching departments of ideological and political Education also were merged into the School of Trade and Law of Chongqing University,which was renamed as School of Trade and Public Administration in 2002. In 2008, the University decided to set up the Teaching and Research Institution of Marxist Theories, specializing in the undergraduate ideological and political education, which had an equal status as the School of Trade and Public Administration under the same management system. Since 2011, Teaching and Research Institution of Marxist Theories has been an independent unit under direct supervision of the University. The Institution was renamed as the School of Marxism in July, 2016,.

The School of Marxism is jointly built and supported by the Publicity Department of Chongqing Municipality Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Chongqing University, authorized as one of the municipal key Marxist schools. The School includes six departments, i.e., the Department of Postgraduate Ideological and Political Education, the Department of Basic Theory of Marxism, the Department of Sinicization of Marxism, the Department of Ideological,Morality and Law, the Department of Modern and Contemporary Chinese History and the Department of Affairs and Policies. The School is responsible for the ideological and political education of the whole university undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students. There are a lot of excellent teachers with good reputation in the School, including an Excellent Teaching and Scientific Research Team awarded by the Ministry of Education, a Nomination Award of National Influential Ideological and Political Educator, six Chongqing Municipal Funding Programs for Excellent Young and Middle-aged Ideological and Political Educators in Colleges and Universities, two most Popular Teachers of Chongqing University, more than ten Excellent Teachers of Chongqing University, Excellent Young Teachers of Chongqing University, Teaching Fund Award, etc.

The School has been approved first-rank discipline of Marxism doctorate degree by Chongqing University’s independent review. Moreover, the School has five disciplinary platforms with two provincial level academic research centers, Policy and Theory Research Center of Ministry of Civil Affairs as well as Chongqing Municipal Center for the Popularization of Humanities and Social Sciences. The school has initially formed a high-qualified staff team for its further development with appropriate ages, academic titles and disciplines, there are 58 teachers with 14 professors, 24 associate professors and 20 lecturers nowadays and six PhD supervisors. Some of the staff have been awarded academic honors, such as the Famous Experts and Teachers in the Field of Philosophy and Social Science of Chongqing Municipal Talent Plan,the Young Gifted Top One of Chongqing Municipal Talents, the Chongqing Municipal Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, the Candidate of Young Outstanding Talents of Ideological and Political Education Support Program Funded by Ministry of Education, the Chongqing Municipal Academic and Technical Leaders and the Reserve Candidates of Chongqing Municipal Academic and Technical Leaders.

According to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the School will enhance its academic influence and staff’s educational competence with the support of the University to achieve the goal of building a national first-class Marxist school.
