Biography

Associate Professor Yi (James) Guo, PhD (Macquarie University), is Head of the Department of International Communication in the School of Journalism and Communication at Chongqing University. He commenced his professional career as a correspondent for the Xinhua News Agency and joined Chongqing University in 2018. While teaching in China, James maintains professional connections with Australian academia. He is currently an honorary member affiliated with the Centre for Media History at Macquarie University – Australia’s only research centre dedicated to conducting and fostering research on the history of the media.

James’ ongoing research interest focuses on media studies with a specific spotlight on transcultural and transnational issues. He has published more than 60 journal articles or book chapters on this topic. As a media historian based in Asia, he is involved in international collaborations on theorising the research area of transnational journalism history, which include the six-volumeCultural History of Media(Bloomsbury),A Companion to Transnational Journalism History(Routledge), theJournal for Media Historyspecial issue on transnational journalism history, as well as numerous invited talks or conference presentations.

As an award-winning author, his book entitledFreedom of the Press in China: A Conceptual History(Amsterdam UP) deals with the one-hundred-year historical trajectory of press freedom, a contested journalistic idea, in the Chinese context. Reviews of the book appear in journals such asChina Quarterly,Media History, and theJournal of Global Intellectual History. James is the Chief Investigator responsible for two research projects about Western news reporters in interwar China. He has secured external research funding for undertaking the projects.
