The construction of the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Transmissions dates back to 1988, with the approval of the former State Planning Commission. In 1991, the laboratory was formally open to the public, with national official acceptance.

The laboratory constantly focuses on theoretic and applied fundamental research in high-performance mechanical transmission-relevant realm. To accommodate significant demands of mechanical transmission in modernization construction of national defense and economy, focus are put on the cutting-edge research frontier of high-efficiency, high-precision, heavy-duty, green, and reliable power transmission. Systematic and in-depth theoretical fundamental research is conducted to explore key scientific problems regarding the design, manufacturing, measurement and materials of mechanical transmission system.
